May's installment of "Behind the Scenes" highlights Tara Kirkland of Custard Boutique in Savannah, GA and Greenville, SC. Custard specializes in eco friendly, domestic, fashion forward and unique items. I first met Tara at the grand opening party for her shop in Savannah years ago. She just celebrated her 7 year anniversary in Savannah and opened her Greenville location in 2012. Tara has an incredible eye which has continued to sustain the interest of locals and tourist alike. With the fickle nature of fashion it's incredible to watch how Custard has not only thrived, but expanded. Tara's well edited shops clearly feature a unique point of view. Trust me when I say that anyone, from ladies who lunch to hipsters, will find something to take away from Custard.

Collects Too much stuff- vintage books on flora and fauna, animals (I have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 2 rats, 3 birds, and various other wild animals I help rehab), small brass animal bookends... unicorns... you get the idea.
Admires My close friends- they see all the crazy and still want to hang out with me- they must be thick skinned.
Daydreams To have a goat farm.
Guilty Pleasures Sitting in the dark, listening to songs on records that my husband selects- and giving my dog, Manchester, edamame.
Weekend Pursuits If it is sunny (not necessarily warm or hot) I want to be on the water- that means kayaking, on a friend's boat, tubing, or just hanging out by a pool or lake, or creek- and if there is no water to be found, then antiquing for all those things I mentioned before in my laundry list of items I collect.
Libation of Choice Craft beer, and rye- neat
Coffee or Tea Coffee- always- black
Blooms of Choice Thistle and sea holly
Favorite Books Perfume by Patrick Suskind and Dharma Lion: A Biography of Allen Ginsberg by Michael Schumacher
Where I’d Rather Be Cuddling a wild baby giraffe, penguin, lion...
Lipstick or Gloss of the Moment None. Ever. I pretty much only wear mascara unless I think my photo is going to be taken and then I add a little eye colour, but I never do anything on the lips, I don't feel like myself.
Nail Polish Du Jour I like it natural- but that said, if I had to pick- I would go with black. OPI always seems to have great colours that make me wish that my nails would not chip after one day, so sometimes I kid myself a buy a cool blue or another black, but I never use them.
Scent Ambre Blends- essential oils - I love Invoke and Solace both are 100% organic oils, soft and subtle, and you bet- every time I wear them- people ask about it.
Style Icon My go to is a combo of Mr. T and Mr. Rogers- I have always thought that those two men were beyond any kind of cool I could ever achieve. I guess, the big thing they both have in common is layers. I have always been a fan of layers- Mr. T also has had some of the coolest hair of all time!
Can’t Leave the House Without Accessories. I may not be much for makeup and nail polish- but I do love jewelry. I love hand made, unique pieces- I have a stack of slim wrist cuffs and bangles I almost NEVER take off, (artist Workhorse, Betsy & Iya, vintage pieces and a craft fair find complete a stack of 5) a recycled silver talisman necklace (made in Vancouver by Pyrrha) and my wedding rings (by Melissa Joy Manning- also recycled gold).
Pending Vacations Good stuff in the works here- a trip out to San Francisco for the Renegade Craft Fair, Headed to Durham, NC and the Outer Banks, and a mini trip to Chicago.
Crushing On My friends at
Red Clay Soap - they are an amazing family, their soap is awesome, and all of the baby goats, mom goats and general farm wildlife are so lovely that I feel my heart on the brink of bursting just typing about it!

So the next time you're in the general vicinity of Greenville or Savannah make sure you pop by Custard. You won't leave empty handed. Trust me. Bonus: they ship!
